This week in Latvia begins the VIII International Folk Dance Festival ‘Sudmaliņas’

The VIII International Folk dance Festival ‘Sudmaliņas’ will begin on Saturday, July 2 with a magnificent World dance concert in Dzintari Concert Hall, Jūrmala. Festival concerts will take place in Rīga, Jūrmala, Jelgava and Rundāle Palace park until July 7. This year folk dance groups from Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, China, Latvia, Poland and Turkey will take part in the festival ‘Sudmaliņas’.

Saturday, July 2 at 18.00 there will be a festive procession of the participants of the festival ‘Sudmaliņas’ in Jūrmala - from Horna garden along Jomas iela up to Turaidas iela.

At 19.30 in the World dance concert in Dzintari Concert Hall, groups from Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, China, Latvia, Poland and Turkey will present dance patterns of different countries and cultures.  Guests of the concert - folk dance ensembles Dancis, Gatve, Līgo, Rotaļa and Teiksma. Sunday, July 3 at 17.00 in Dzintari Concert Hall will take place Dance ensemble contest in which the festival participants will perform two dances based in the choreographic and musical heritage of their nation. The contest is included in the programme of the festival ‘Sudmaliņas’ for the first time, and it will be judged by an international jury. Entrance free.

Monday, July 4 – festival participants will go to Rīga Social Welfare centre ‘Mežciems’ and residence ‘Dzintara melodija’ in Rīga, as well as to the National Rehabilitation centre ‘Vaivari’ in Jūrmala, where they will give charity concerts.

Tuesday, July 5 – everybody is invited to Vērmanes garden in Rīga, where from 10.00 until 20.00 there will be Latvian goodies and craft fair. At 12.00 and 18.00 festival participants will welcome spectators to the concert ‘The God is dancing with Thunder’. Entrance free.

Wednesday, July 6 - at 18.00 the Green theatre of Rundāle Palace park will be transformed into an open-air stage. The spectators of the concert ‘Dance steps set the world in motion’ will have a chance to enjoy the wealth of the folk dances of the world. Visitors have to buy entrance tickets in Rundāle Palace park.

Thursday, July 7 in the Final concert of the festival ‘World winds in our dances’ in Pasta sala (Pasta Island), Jelgava dance ensembles from Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, China, Latvia, Poland and Turkey will perform their most spectacular dances. During the Final concert there will also take place awarding of the winners of the dance contest.
